This workshop has three parts.

• Defining extinction:  What does extinction mean?  What is the difference between dead and extinct?  How do you know a species is extinct? Are some species more extinct than others?

• What can we learn from the mass extinctions of the past?

• Are we now in the middle of a mass extinction?  How do we recognize it?  is there anything we can do about it?
